Not a lot of things in life are as depressing as having so many ideas and not being able to get them off the ground, it could be a lot of things that get in the way but usually its our owns beat downs that stop us before we even begin. “what if I look silly?” “My friends will think bad of me” well you will look silly but that’s beside the point as most people do when they do something for the first time, if you are not ready to share something because you suck at it, thats fine but dont let that stop you from doing it. To the friends thinking you are silly, well either they give you some stick and move on as any real friends would do, or if they continue to put you down, well perhaps find some new friends. I have found most people to be supportive even if they dont like my writing or what I am doing personally, they still encourage me to keep creating anything.
A thought to action
This is a big move and often does not come to fruition or if it does it only lasts a few weeks at best before your motivation deteriorates into feeling defeated and giving up entirely. After all if it was easy everyone would be doing it.
A couple of things that define the way that I approach anything new if its an idea, job or project. Start small and precise in your idea, if you have big dreams of being the next patagonia you might want to look back at where they started with pitons and other climbing equipment to realise it was a pretty small concept. Be strict and do something each day to improve or work towards your end result, where that might do a 30 sec clip cause eventually it’ll lead to 1min..5.. 10min clips and your film might just start coming together.
Have a vision of yourself in the name of what you are making and how others would associate you with the brand, you are often the brand to start off with and our quite unique so utilise that. not everyone will love you but some will definitely like you and sooner or later people like you more just because others do, and then you need to focus even more on what makes you/brand important and unique. I want my vision/brand to portray honesty, openness in knowledge sharing and expanding community ties in the sport/pursuits I love and promote.
Utilise other people around you when it comes to things you are not good at and need help with, if you are able to do everything yourself wow, id imagine you have already got something no one else in the world has, but if you are like the rest of us, you need help. So, if you dont know anyone directly perhaps its time to be brave and start reaching out, likely people will offer this info to you for free and when you start the ball rolling eventually you will have money to give to people (mayb even the same people) and everyone benefits. So who and what do they do that you cant and how can you use them to make the most out of your brand, people will be more likely to help if you have a problem you are solving or it aligns well with themselves so make sure to have a think about how you pitch it.
I am working on
Personally I am to make a 10minute mini documentary of myself showcasing my skills and place in the community and the visions I have for the outdoor sector and of my partner Louisa and her passions for the ocean and teaching woman to go diving while also showcasing wonderful dishes you can try and create with less pressured fish stocks.
I am in the process of creating a pitch to present to some videographers I know and see what they say. I will write up anything else I discover along the way.
